Main Tera Hero movie review: Despite flaws Varun makes it work

Two and a half star for Varun Dhawan's ‘Main Tera Hero'. It is solely him who makes this drama an energetically light-heart entertainment despite it's numerous flaws.Stars- **1/2 Stars- Varun Dhawan, Ileana D' Cruz, Nargis Fakhri, Arunoday Singh, Anupam KherDirector- David DhawanMusic Director- Sajid-WajidDavid Dhawan, who is known for his humourous flicks, is back with a doze of it again and this time he gets a perfect replacement of Govinda in form of his very own son Varun Dhawan.It has been quite a while, since we have witnessed a humourous drama in cinema, if we ignore the unintentional humour presented in recent serious dramas. For good, David Dhawan's ‘Main Tera Hero' is not like his last disaster Do Knot disturb and to some extent his semi-cooked ‘Chashme Baddoor'.However, the flick is far from perfection with oodles of non-sense events, the flick rises above with Varun's energy, who jumps around in every scene with gimmicks and paints the unintentional blemishes. He plays Sheenu (Vaun Dhawan), the notorious kid in Ooty, who in order to get a degree to prove his worth takes admission in a Bangalore college. But he ends up hoping around the girl Sunaina (Ileana D' Cruz) and challenges Angad (Arunoday Singh), a local cop who forcibly wants to marry her.On the other hand, Sheenu has found another die-hard lover in Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri) whom he saved from goons by bashing them on his way from Ooty to Bangalore. Ayesha's father Vikrant (Anupam Kher), an Asian Don, kidnaps Sunaina to get hold of Sheenu for his daughter. Now how Varun gets screwed up in this love triangle and how he strikes back, this quiz with twists and turns holds you throughout the 128 minutes runtime.Now even if the story sounds silly, you are hypnotised by the pace, which David Dhawan never loses. The tried and tested formula gets a new dimension with some one-liners, action sequences and songs. The unoriginal chain of events crops up many questions in your mind. Like being a cop, how could Angad take classes in college, why did Vikrant kidnap Sunaina when he could easily kidnap Sheenu for his loving daughter? Twists and turns in the climax look forcibly inducted to give a feel of suspense, though, it doesn't work at all. The cop and the Don turning into comic characters were expected from it but despite all these hiccups, Main Tera Hero reaches its destination. David Dhawan, though, doesn't take comedy to a new level but he sticks to his basic plans, which he has been following in his earlier dramas and that works in bits and pieces. Even, if he doesn't have his favourite Govida and bhai Salman Khan, he makes their presence felt with their mimicry in few scenes which brings smiles on your face.The humour here isn't slapstick but silly and kiddish, having said that it's innocent. With songs and action, the first half is energetic and has lesser flaws than compared to the second half which has too many characters to spoil the flow. The characterisation of a don Anupam Kher and his assistant Saurabh Shukla are expectedly and intentionally made comical but they don't contribute much to escalate the fun.Whenever, they play spoilsport, Varun comes in jumping and showing his comical shades. In the end, it's his efforts, which are a big time savior of this drama. At times you feel, if it wouldn't have been him, then only big stars like Salman and Shah Rukh would have been an appropriate choice for this masala entertainer, which is like a drowning ship battling hard in high tides.Varun carries the entire drama on his shoulders and undoubtedly he is a package of talent and energy. His lively act and fun dialogue delivery livens up the screen. His dance encourages you to join him at every step.Ileana D' Cruz is great in her act. Nargis Fakhri adds some oomph in the show but she struggles in her Hindi dialect.Arunoday Singh tries to be comical villain but struggles at times. Anupam Kher and Saurabh Shukla are equally good.It was good to see Rajpal Yadav after a good break. He too fills in those dull moments.Music by Sajid-Wajid is brilliant. Most of his foot-tapping tracks like ‘Saari night Besharmi ki height' and ‘Palat' are good as well as nicely choreographed.I'll go with two and a half star for Varun Dhawan's ‘Main Tera Hero'. It is solely him who makes this drama an energetically light-heart entertainment despite its numerous flaws.
