Kochadaiiyaan movie review: The latest technology doesn't support this Rajinikanth flick

Debutant director Soundarya R Ashwin, who achieved proficiency in graphic designing, has been able to fill her efficiency into the motion picture in Kochadaiiyaan but expecting it anywhere near Hollywood's classic Avatar and Tintin would be unwise.Ratings-**1/2Stars- Rajinikanth, Deepika Padukone, Jackie Shroff, Sarath Kumar, AadhiDirector- Soundarya R AshwinMusic- A.R. RahmanThe periodic tale, which is garnished with romance, action and decent screenplay, looks an honest attempt by Soundarya but it isn't extraordinary considering the much hyped India's first 3D motion capture format. While you witness this periodic drama with the thought of superstar Rajinikanth in your mind, knowing it's not be his physical appearance on screen, there is a made-up likeability for the flick. It's alright being a Rajinikanth fan but inappropriate for those who are just looking for two and half hours of entertainment.Now, from the point of his fan there would be less to criticise knowing that it's a Rajinikanth flick, which has only one rule that there is no rule.He is a ‘superstar Rajinikanth' and the fact that he is in the flick, is supreme. Here he is a courageous warrior Rana who has some hidden plans in mind. He befriends with Kotaipattinam king Mahendra's (Jackie Shroff) son Veera Mahendra (Aadi) and using their army he conquers numerous kingdoms. This wins Mahendra's confidence and Rana asks him now to flex his muscles by declaring a war against a bigger dynasty Pandya led by king Rishikodagan (Nassar), using their own men who are trapped in Kotaipattinam.Here is surfaced a hidden truth. Rana is the son of former Pandya King Kochadaiiyaan Ranadheeran and he uses this strategy to give the country back their lost sons who were living under the slavery in Kotaipattinam for over a decade.Rana brings them back to Pandya and befriends with the king Rishikodagan. He falls in love with his daughter Vadhana (Deepika Padukone) but amidst all this Rana tries to assassinate the Pandya king. Now why Rana does so, Kochadaiiyaan unfolds this mystery further. While the entire story is engaging with a good screenplay, the presentation through the latest technology stands as a biggest hurdle for the flick. As you go through the entire periodic drama, a thought in your wits that minus 3D effect or any other technology, Kochadaiiyaan with the real physical presence of its characters would have been an epic flick that could have been remembered for years.Surely, it's a Rajinikanth's flick whose aura is larger than movies. But minus his physical appearance, the fascination and excitement for the flick is not much high.The reason is clear, its the technical flaw, which doesn't go down well with the screenplay. The characters' expressions aren't polished, so you don't feel the emotions of any of them. The action stunts, choreographed by Hollywood's action coordinator Michael, aren't razor sharp. These instances may excite you, as a Rajinikanth fan, to blow whistle and applaud him for carrying the same attitude which has made him a superstar. But the bitter result here is- playing a high-definition GTAIV game on an old processor PC.While the songs are mostly unwelcomed, Deepika Padukone's dance is the most humourous portion in the flick and we bet you the chorography will leave you in splits. Deepika's short romance with Rajinikanth too is ineffective.A couple of songs are good to ears, but sadly A.R. Rahman wouldn't be remembered for any them. You just love them while you are on your seats. It wouldn't be appropriate to judge the stars' performance as what we get to see is, their 3D graphic models. But to their credit they have lent their voices with great poise and control. One would be happy to hear Rajinikanth, Deepika, Jackie Shroff who excel in their voice over. Nassar and Sarathkumar too add great command to their voices. I'll go with two and a half stars Kochadaiiyaan. Watch it in 3D or 2D, it hardly matters. If you are Rajinikanth fan experience it once or else look out for other options.
