Gunday movie review: Boring bromance kills the mood!

Gunday is a masala flick with no necessary ingredients and innovation. The entire hullabaloo surrounding the drama for its fast-paced narration, music and big actors, isn't justified here. Gunday packs the old stuff and tries to set an innovative criterion of friendship. But it fails to set any such benchmark, which could have been called as a new era of bromance.Director Ali Abbas Zafar who failed with his debut flick Mere Brother Ki Dulhan will still have to work hard to taste success. He plays with the periodic war of India-Pakistan but doesn't provide an accurate outline.With Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, he resurrects friends for life emotion in a usual manner. It starts from the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War resulting in the separation of the region from Pakistan, which gave birth to an independent Bangladesh. The two young orphans Bikram and Bala were refugees then and they witnessed it all. They battled each and every day for their living and finally ventured into Kolkata (earlier known as Calcutta) to find a work space but ultimately become the coal bandits.The Kolkatians swear over their indestructible friendship and tout them as the most powerful and fearless goons of the city. On the other hand, they fear none but Nandita (Priyanka Chopra), a cabaret dancer, they are in love with. Between all this romance, a cunning officer ACP Satyajeet Sarkar (Irrfan Khan) is plotting his net to trap Gundays and wants to end their world of black market. How their friendship survives through all this, is the tale the director narrates in this flick. But this wasn't a bonding we expected from the flick. The director tries to emphasise over the unbeatable emotional attachment between the male protagonists, which is neither intense nor crazy. Though the two actors try hard by doing some kiddish act, but all in vain. However, when the fearless duo jumps over the sequences, the viewers celebrate their friendship and courage. Their bromance hit by the entrance of Priyanka tickles your funny bone at the same time but those are rare moments.Another problem lies in the story and dialogues, which are old-fashioned and very much predictable. Something that even today's daily soaps don't prefer. Not even the surprise brought in the final hour moves you. At a moment, the peppy songs enlighten your mood, but if we are appreciating just music there is certainly a problem in the screenplay.All this set in the beautiful Kolkata where cinematographer Aseem Mishra outlines some of the already witnessed settings in this flick. The performances of the actors are not to be blamed, but what could be said if it's ruined by bad script. Ranveer Singh who last year gave some of the passionate performances gives yet another fine performance. He charms you once again with humour and silent aggression.Arjun Kapoor, just two flicks old but is good again. He is short-tempered and his character has some shades of grey. Priyanka Chopra is an eye candy. She brings down men to their knees as a cabaret dancer and is brilliant in her act. But the surprise in her character isn't influential enough.Irrfan Khan's character as a clever cop is too impractical and he gives it whatever he can. Saurabh Shukla who plays a lawyer defending the baddies is wasted. Pankaj Tripathi in a cameo also goes waste.Music by Sohail Sen is high on energy. Almost all the tracks are wonderfully composed. Jiah, Jashn-E-Ishqa, Tune Mari Entriya are already the chartbusters. Julius Packiam adds the background score which perfectly adds to the scenes.I'll go with two stars for Gunday. It is a masala flick with no necessary ingredients and innovation. Sadly it's disappointing.
