New Delhi: Thespian Dilip Kumar has been admitted to Lilavati Hospital on Saturday for treatment of pneumonia after he complained of cough and cold.

"Dilip Kumar has been admitted for pneumonia. He is suffering from cough and cold. We have put him on antibiotic treatment. He is not in ICU," Dr Jalil Parkar of Lilavati Hospital.

Sources as quoted by leading daily said that the yesteryear superstar was afflicted with a condition known as broncho pneumonia in both his lungs. The ailment involves acute inflammation of the walls of the bronchioles – the passageways by which air passes through the nose or mouth to the alveoli (air sacs) of the lungs – apparently due to bacterial infection.

In a chest infection case as that of Dilip Kumar's, the air passage ways that deliver air to the lungs swell up causing the infection.

The thespian who will turn 92 in a few days, was hospitalised in Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital, for a chest infection. A leading daily reported that the actors condition is not serious.

A hospital source was quoted as saying that the actor was just suffering from a cold for a few days and has been kept under observation in a private room.

'The Tragedy King' of Bollywood known for his films like 'Devdas', 'Mughal - e - Azam', 'Madhumati' and many other films, was hospitalised last year after a silent heart attack. Considered as one of the finest actors of the Indian film industry, Dilip Sahab has essayed both leading and character roles for over six decades.

The 91-year-old actor was hospitalised in September last year after suffering a silent heart attack. Kumar, known as the 'King of Tragedy', essayed iconic roles in classics like 'Devdas', 'Madhumati', 'Mughal-e-Azam'and 'Ganga Jamuna'.

He was born Muhammad Yusuf Khan on December 11, 1922, in Peshawar (now in Pakistan) and his acting career spanned six decades and over 60 films.

Earlier this month everyone panicked when rumours about his death started doing the rounds. At that time, Amitabh Bachchan took to his microblogging site Twitter and had posted," Some baseless rumours being spread about Yusuf Saheb - Dilip Kumar, being ill .. Saira ji just informed me he is perfectly fine."

We hope for his quick recovery.
