Mumbai: Strange as it sounds, Censor Board, recently, objected usage of the word ‘Bombay' in a music video on women's safety, sparking an outrage on the social media.
The music video titled as “Sorry” was written by the vocalist Mihir Joshi.
The singer sensing foul in the decision, wrote the song in December 2012 in order to highlight the vulnerability of women's safety after the brutal gang-rape in a moving bus in Delhi.
He clarified to the board that the word was only used because it rhymed well.
He told to Hindustan Times, “If the censor board can explain how the term 'Bombay' hurts anyone's sentiments and if their explanation is acceptable to me and everyone associated with the music video, I will be okay with the decision.”
Board member Ashok Pandit retaliated on the issue by saying that the certificate of the song was issued by UPA-appointee Leela Samson on December 05, 2014 and if Joshi had any objections regarding the same, he should have visited the revising committee soon after.
Pandit remarked, “When the censor board objected to the word then, why didn't he (Joshi) go to the revising committee? If you have accepted the certificate, you have accepted the change. Why has he woken up after a month?”
Soon after the news went viral, the hashtag “Bombay” trended on Twitter for several hours as may users described the decision as ‘mindless', ‘idiotic', and ‘unacceptable'.
As a matter of fact, the financial capital of India was renamed Mumbai in 1995 after an aggressive campaign by Shiv Sena.
