Mumbai, Jul 4: Actor Atul Kulkarni's role in the remake version of 'Zanjeer' is said to be inspired by Mid-Day journalist J Dey.
Jyotirmoy Dey, popularly known among friends and acquaintance as J Dey, was a senior investigative journalist, who was shot dead in June 2011.
Jigna Vora, working as a reporter with a English daily, was arrested in November 2011 for her alleged
complicity in the murder of the fellow journalist. In August 2012, she was granted bail by the special MCOCA court. Kulkarni's character in the film 'Zanjeer' is based on the ace scribe, a statement issued by the makers said.
With the plot revolving around oil mafia and the crime reporter being an important character in the film, it draws connections with the events leading up to the gruesome killing of J-Dey, it said.
Apoorva Lakhia directed remake of the 1973 hit film of the same name, has Ram Charan Teja, Priyanka Chopra and Sanjay Dutt essaying the characters played by Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan and Pran in the original film.
Zanjeer will be resurrected with new punch and is slated to release on September 6.
