New Delhi: Tabu, is undoubtedly one of the finest actress Bollywood has seen. She has acted in a plethora of movies in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Bengali languages. One remarkable trait of her performance is that it lingers in your memory long after you have left the cinema hall.

Born Tabassum Fatima Hashmi, Tabu's parents divorced soon after her birth. But she doesn't feel her father's absence affected her.

Tabu is known to deliver powerful performances. From breathing life into Mira Nair's Namesake to romancing Amitabh Bachchan in Cheeni Kum; it is Tabu's versatility which has helped her win two National awards, a Padma Shri award and seven Filmfare nominations (including a record four Critics Award for Best Actress.)

1. Veerendra in Maachis:

Directed by Gulzar, this 1996 movie was critically acclaimed. Based around the Sikh insurgency in Punjab, Tabu made a stellar performance. Tabu played Veeran, the fiancée of Kripal Singh (Chandrachur Singh) who is caught in the Khalistan movement. She went on to win her first National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance.

2. Mumtaz in Chandni Bar:

In Chandni Bar, the 2001 movie directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, Tabu plays the role of a village girl Mumtaz who is forced to perform at a dance bar. She is married to a gangster and the movie revolves around the troubles she faces after her husband gets killed in an encounter. She returns to the bar to raise her children. Tabu scored high scores in the report card of both critics and audiences with her heart-touching role.

3. Ghazala Meer in Haider:

Although Vishal Bhardwaj's Haider was all about Shahid Kapoor, one couldn't stay unsmitten by Tabu's role. As Ghazala Meer, a woman torn between her love for her son and her desire to lead a happy life, Tabu gave a nuanced performance. Tabu won the Filmfare award for the Best Supporting actress for the movie.
