New Delhi: A long tussle with the Central Board of Film Certification and leak just two days before release, did not deter the box office collections of ‘Udta Punjab’. The neo noir drama based on substance abuse recorded earnings of Rs 10.05 crores on the first day.
This surely is a winner for the movie, which got an ‘A’ certificate after the Bombay High Court’s verdict.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted this about the movie’s collections:
It should not be forgotten that the movie saw almost housefull opening in the northern part of India, especially Punjab and Delhi. Media reports suggested that villagers travelled in trucks to reach multiplexes to watch the movie on the first day itself.

The film, starring Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh, got a wide release in around 2,000 screens. Reportedly, in Wave Cinemas of Punjab, the movie has 40-50% advance bookings and it is full till Sunday.
Most of the critics gave the movie thumbs up and many also said after watching the movie they couldn’t understand why the CBFC would want so many cuts.
Almost everyone was impressed by the striking performances of actors Alia Bhatt and Shahid Kapoor.
With such a beginning, one can only expect the collections of ‘Udta Punjab’ to fly high and higher.
