The Accidental Prime Minister starring Anupam Kher and Akshaye Khanna has earned Rs 4.50 crore on Friday. The film is co-written and directed by first-timer Vijay Ratnakar Gutte. Featuring Kher in the lead role of former PM Manmohan Singh, the film is partly adapted from Sanjaya Baru's memoir of the same name. Baru was the Media Adviser of the ex-PM and his character is played by Akshaye Khanna in the film.
Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the box office collection of the film on the micro-blogging website. He tweeted, “#TheAccidentalPrimeMinister picked up from evening shows onwards… Records decent numbers on Day 1… Fri ₹ 4.50 cr. India biz. #TAPM”
The events that are addressed in The Accidental Prime Minister belongs to the serving period of Dr. Manmohan Singh between 2004 and 2014 as India's Prime Minister. The film's story is intriguing as it reiterates all the questions which each of us had regarding Singh's authorities. But overall the film has received poor reviews.
On the other hand, Vicky Kaushal’s action drama film Uri: The Surgical Strike opened with thunderous numbers on Friday. The film directed by Aditya Dhar is based on the real-life surgical strike carried out by the Indian Army in 2016. The film stars Vicky Kaushal, Yami Gautam, Mohit Raina and Kirti Kulhari in prominent roles. On its opening day itself, the film earns Rs 8.20 crore.
Apart from Uri, Rajinikanth’s Petta and Ajith’s Viswasam also released this week. But they are unlikely to affect The Accidental Prime Minister’s business. However, Ranveer Singh and Rohit Shetty's collaboration Simmba is STILL weaving magic at the box office collection.
