While Anupam Kher will be seen playing the lead role of former Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh in The Accidental Prime Minister Akshaye Khanna has been roped in to play Sanjaya Baru. For those unaware, Sanjaya Baru was the media advisor and chief spokesperson of then PM Dr. Manmohan Singh, who courted controversy when he wrote the memoir, The Accidental Prime Minister. Akshaye, who was last seen in the Sridevi starrer Mom said that he was absolutely “thrilled and excited to be a part of a venture” calling it a game changer at many levels.

That he hasn’t yet had the “privilege” to meet Baru, Khanna said “The balance which he (Baru) gave to the book needs to be admired”, in an interview to ET.

When asked about his role, he said “I realised that it is a very important movie, whether I was a part of it or not was secondary. Even if my role was insignificant I would have still done it”. However, he added that his role in the movie is “outstanding” and the screenplay “divine”.

Manmohan Singh biopic is an adaptation of Sanjay Baru's controversial book "The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh" and Anupam, who plays the lead role, resembled every bit of former Indian Prime Minister.

The black and white poster showed the side profile of Anupam, dressed as Manmohan Singh -- complete with a white beard and turban. The focus of the poster is, however, more on the silhouette of a woman -- presumably Congress President Sonia Gandhi -- standing in the corridor of Parliament House.

Directed by debutant Vijay Ratnakar Gutte, the memoir by Baru is expected to hit the screens in December 2018, just ahead of the next general election in 2019.
