Twenty Bollywood personalities including Shah Rukh Khan, Naseeruddin Shah, Madhuri Dixit, Anil Kapoor and Tabu, have been invited by the group behind the Oscars film awards to join the Academy Awards body. The list was released on Monday and it aims to ensure diversity. A post was shared from the official Twitter handle of The Academy that also had a message from filmmaker Steven Spielberg. Have a look.
The tweet reads, “Our new member list is officially out! And Directors Branch governor Steven Spielberg has a message for all of those invited to join. http://Oscars.org/NewMembers2018 #WeAreTheAcademy.”
Along with the renowned actors, two producers, Aditya Chopra and Guneet Monga have also made it to the list. The cinematographer of Beyond the Clouds and Highway, Anil Mehta, also features in the new list. If all invitees accept membership, then the total strength will become 9,226.
This expansion in the membership took place because of the anti-diversity backlash that the body had to face in the past two years. Thus, female cinematographers from India, Mexico and France have also become the part of the list to ensure diversity.
In 2017, Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Aamir Khan, Irrfan Khan Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai were invited from India.
