Shah Rukh, Kajol, Ajay Devgn were the original cast of Kalank,

Karan Johar's Kalank, which has an ensemble star cast comprising Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Aditya Roy Kapur and Sonakshi Sinha is a dream project of the filmmaker. The movie set in the 1940s was conceptualised 15 years ago by KJo's father Yash Johar. It was meant to be directed by Karan himself but due to unavoidable circumstances, the project got shelved. Now, the multi-starrer period drama helmed by Abhishek Varman is set to release on April 19, 2019.

Teaser of the film was launched recently and since then fans are unable to keep calm. From the magnificent sets, tone of the film to the chemistry between Varun-Alia and reunion of Madhuri-Sanjay, makers have given ample reasons to eagerly wait for the film. While Alia Bhatt plays the role of Roop, Varun Dhawan will be seen as Zafar. Aditya Roy Kapur is Dev, Sonakshi Sinha is Satya, Madhuri Dixit is Bahaar Begum and Sanjay Dutt will play the role of Bajraj Chaudhary in the film

But do you Varun, Alia and others were not the original choice of makers? In his book An Unsuitable Boy, Karan had revealed that Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, Rani Mukerji and Kajol were the original cast of Kalank. ''When my father was alive, I was writing a love story set in pre-partition times. But the canvas was too large, it was supposed to have Shah Rukh, Ajay, Rani and Kajol. It was about homes, and it had a Hindu-Muslim angle. It was a very strong subject, and would be called Kalank,” read an extract from Karan's book.

On a related note, Kalank marks the fourth collaboration of Varun and Alia on the big screen. In fact, with this movie, Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt are also reuniting on-screen after 21 years.

Karan is quite emotional about Kalank. On the teaser launch event of the film, the filmmaker poured his heart out. “Kalank is a movie that is close to my heart and my father’s since 2003 and it’s been on my mind since then. It was difficult without him to touch this film and one day I just decided to do it. I must say it’s been possible because of Sajid Nadiadwala and Vijay Singh. It’s been a pleasure and I’m looking at working on more films with him in future,'' he had said.
