Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt starrer Gully Boy has become the latest victim of piracy. The Zoya Akhtar directorial has been leaked by infamous Tamilrockers. The movie based on Mumbai hip hop culture got leaked online hours after its release. Earlier, Kangana Ranaut's Manikarnika and Nawazuddin Siddiqui's Thackeray were also leaked by the same group. Tamilrockers has become a cause of concern for film industries across India as it is now a hub of pirated movies.
Gully Boy has raked in Rs 18.70 crore on day 1, becoming highest opener of 2019 and also the second highest for Ranveer Singh after Simmba. However, one thing to be noted here is that Simmba released on Christmas holidays, whereas Gully Boy hit the screens on Valentine Day, which is an unofficial holiday.
Earlier, The Accidental Prime Minister, Petta, Viswasam, Zero among others were also leaked online by Tamilrockers. The piracy site has also not spared Hollywood movies.
Gully Boy is loosely based on rappers Divine and Naezy. It is Ranveer and Alia's first film together but their on-screen chemistry is impeccable. While Ranveer plays aspiring rapper Murad from Mumbai slums, Alia is his girlfriend Safeena, who is a medical student. Other actors in the movie are Kalki Koechlin, Vijay Maurya, Vijay Raaz and Amruta Subhash among others. Gully Boy is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under the banner of Excel Entertainment in association with Tiger Baby.
For Gully Boy, India TV movie critic wrote, ''Gully Boy is a path-breaking film. It's nothing like those masala inspirational, motivational films you see in Bollywood where everything sets right in the end magically. Things are seen progressing organically in the film and that's the essence of every Zoya Akhtar directorial. Without glorification or Bollywoodification as we would like to say, Gully Boy is a masterpiece in Indian cinema. The loose ending adds to the artistic value of the film''. Read full review here.
