Ranbir Kapoor on Jagga Jasoos sequel: If the film does well, we may take it forward

The chances of Ranbir's Jagga Jasoos sequel depends a lot on how the movie does at the box office upon its release this Friday. "We have left the film on a cliffhanger, where it needs a part two or three. If they accept it, then we would love to take the character and the genre forward," said Ranbir, who turned producer for the film.

He said that their team earlier wanted to do a spin-off or an origin story but the plans were shelved after Jagga Jasoos took more than three years to make.

"In the first year when we were working on the film, we thought about a TV show, a prequel like 'Junior Jagga' or a spin-off. But the film took a lot of time and it was a hard film to make," he said.

He said that they were scared for the film due to various reasons - including delays and the much publicised break-up between Ranbir and the movie's leading actress Katrina Kaif

"It took three-and-a-half years to make the film. We were surrounded by a lot of negativity, like why the film is taking so much time, about Katrina and myself. But we just went with the right intention," he added.

Jagga Jasoos has also been criticised for its similarity with Tintin due to Ranbir's quiff but the actor said that movies like Tintin, Indiana Jones, Sherlock Homes and Byomkesh Bakshi served as the inspiration but the story bears no similarity with them.

"These films were Dada's (director Anurag Basu) inspiration as a child and they were my inspiration as well. There is no similarity between 'Tintin' and 'Jagga Jasoos' other than the fact that they are on the mission and there is a case that he has to solve. I think it is the hairstyle that people are connecting to more. But I would like to believe that it is an original film," said the actor.

Ranbir, 34, said that when Barfi! released similar stuff was written about the film which really hurt Basu.

"It was an open inspiration kind of a film and he was not hiding it. So, I think he has taken it up as a challenge to make a new film which has no references and you will not be able to compare it with anything. People don't know what the film is about, so there are a lot of things being written," he said.

It was during the making of "Barfi!" that both Ranbir and Anurag decided to collaborate again.

"We were going to work on a Kishore Kumar biopic but that did not materialise. I told dada, 'let's make a detective film' and he came up with the idea of a musical, a film for kids, a Disney film in its purest form and adventure genre like 'Indiana Jones' and 'Tintin', etc. I felt this genre is exciting to act and produce," he added.

Ranbir is not sure if he would continue producing films in future as Jagga Jasoos was just one of the case. He thinks he doesn't have the knack for movie production. "To become a producer, you require a certain skill set, it's a professional job and I am not good at it. I am not a people's person, I can't manage people, I can't get things done. I am a little lazy as well. So I am happy with my job as an actor. I would like to direct a film one day. But at the same time I am extremely grateful that I have my name in the credit (list- as producer) on a film like 'Jagga Jasoos' that is breaking the boundaries, the barriers of genres," he said.

Ranbir, however, clarifies that his decision not to produce films is not because of the delays in Jagga Jasoos.

He is co-producing the film with Anurag and has floated a company with him called Picture Shuru Productions. Disney is also one of the producers of the movie.
