Rajkummar Rao’s Newton, which has been helmed by Amit V Masurkar, is dominating the news this week. The film released on 22nd September, facing stark competition from Sanjay Dutt’s comeback film Bhoomi and Shraddha Kapoor’s Haseena Parkar. On its opening, Newton did a meagre business of Rs. 96 lakhs ,while Bhoomi and Haseena Parkar raked in Rs. 2.25 crore and Rs. 1.25 crore respectively. However, on the second day, Newton performed magically well on box office.
On Sunday, film trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted the Day 2 collection of Rajkummar Rao’s Newton. The film shows a remarkable growth on Saturday, earning Rs. 2.52 crore, making its total Rs. 3.48 crore. It showed an enormous growth of 162.5%!
The reason behind this tremendous increase in box office numbers is Newton being the latest offering in India’s entry to the Oscars next year. The news, along with the rave reviews from the critics, gave a positive boost to Rajkummar Rao’s black comedy.
Newton is a political satire which follows the story of a newly recruited government rookie, Nootan Kumar, self-named Newton. He is posted in Naxal-inflicted jungles of Chattisgarh to conduct elections. While he faces opposition from his peers, he is adamant to contest fair elections in the constituency which consists of only 74 voters.
