New Delhi: King of Comedy Kapil Sharma’s new show has emerged victorious in the battle of ratings between Colors and Sony TV -- the two rival channel in general entertainment segment.
Notably, Kapil Sharma, after shut down of Comedy Nights with Kapil on Colours and tiff with producers, made a comeback on Sony TV with the brand new show ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ (TKS) on April 23, last month.
Colors, on the other hand, in an attempt to spoil the ratings of Kapil’s opening show, aired the blockbuster movie of 2015 ‘Bajirao Mastani’ at the same time i.e 9 pm on the day.
The channel, in a bid to kill competition, even went a step ahead and ran the first one of hour of the movie without a single break, thus compromising a lot on the revenue front.
This highlights how high the stakes were between the rivalry of two general entertainment channels.
The Kapil Sharma show wins over Twitterati
As per the ratings released by Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) today, Kapil has come first in the race.
‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ bagged 3 rating points, while Bajirao Mastani lagged behind at 2.8, on 23 April. A point translate into of the percentage of total viewers the show managed to get in the given time slot.
It is worth a mention that rating of 3 points (3% of the total viewership at the time) of a show is considered good in the general entertainment channel segment.
However, of late show likes ‘Naagin’ on Colours channel remains exception as they managed to grab 5 rating points.
The margin between the two shows is minimal but if we look at the bigger picture, Sony has really benefited by roping in Kapil Sharma for the show.
The average rating of shows on the Sony TV, has so far, remained as low as 1 point. Once in a while their good shows managed to get 1.5 rating. But TKS broke all records for the Sony TV by grabbing three folds the average rating points of the channel.
Moreover, ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ has also made it to the Top five shows on the Television within first week of launch, which itself is a big feat.
The show lags behind only to established soap operas like Naagin, Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, Kumkum Bhagya and Saathiya.
Besides, what else makes Kapil Sharma’s win sweeter is the fact that Colors had an upper hand in the race over Sony TV following its legacy of good shows.
Super star Shah Rukh Khan was also present in the Kapil’s first episode, but experts say that it was comedian’s popularity which has turned the table in favour of Sony TV as King Khan, who started his acting career on TV, do not command much eye balls on idiot box.
No doubt the first point of the game went to Kapil and Sony TV, but it would be interesting how the battle between King of comedy and colours will unfold going forward.
