Kalank makers have finally dropped the trailer of the much-awaited film. After watching the trailer, it is confirmed that Kalank is primarily a love story of Varun Dhawan's character Zafar and Alia Bhatt's character Roop. There is also a third person involved in their story- Aditya Roy Kapur as Dev. Well, it is quite tough to decide as to who is the third person here-Dev or Zafar? The story is set in the pre-Independence era of 1945 and has an ensemble cast including Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit. There are also two dance numbers by Kriti Sanon and Kiara Advani.
The trailer begins with a somber background score giving us a hint that this magnum opus is an intense drama. The colour, tone and the magnificent sets will remind you of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. If the trailer is anything to go by, Dutt and Dixit have little to do in the film. Kalank will also give you a glimpse of the heart-wrenching partition scenes. Besides other, Kunal Kemmu makes an impressive appearance in the trailer. Also, in the end, we have a DDLJ-inspired scene but with a twist.

But do you Varun, Alia and others were not the original choice of makers? In his book An Unsuitable Boy, KJo had revealed that Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, Rani Mukerji and Kajol were the original cast of Kalank. ''When my father was alive, I was writing a love story set in pre-partition times. But the canvas was too large, it was supposed to have Shah Rukh, Ajay, Rani and Kajol. It was about homes, and it had a Hindu-Muslim angle. It was a very strong subject, and would be called Kalank,” read an extract from Karan's book.
On a related note, Kalank marks the fourth collaboration of Varun and Alia on the big screen. The duo has earlier worked in Student of the Year, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhani and Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Kalank has been directed by Abhishek Varman, who has earlier worked with Alia on 2 States. In fact, with this movie, Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt are also reuniting on-screen after 21 years.
Karan is quite emotional about Kalank. On the teaser launch event of the film, the filmmaker poured his heart out. “Kalank is a movie that is close to my heart and my father’s since 2003 and it’s been on my mind since then. It was difficult without him to touch this film and one day I just decided to do it. I must say it’s been possible because of Sajid Nadiadwala and Vijay Singh. It’s been a pleasure and I’m looking at working on more films with him in future,'' he had said. Kalank is slated to hit theatres on April 17.
