Gully Boy Trailer Out: Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt play non-conformists who dare to dream. Watch video

Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh’s highly-anticipated film Gully Boy’s trailer is out now. A few days ago, a teaser featuring Ranveer in a street rapper avatar was revealed with the song ‘Asli Hip Hop’. The trailer was launched at a grand event in Mumbai which was attended by director Zoya Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani and the star cast. Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy chronicles the journey and struggles of rapper Divine who rose to fame with the song Meri Gully Mein. Ranveer Singh is said to play the role of the struggling rapper who took to the rap to express his struggles. Starring in the female leads are Alia Bhatt and Kalki Koechlin who are playing the love interests of Ranveer Singh. Alia is playing a demure girl from a conservative background just like Ranveer Singh.

In the opening scene of the trailer, Ranveer Singh is seen surrounded by wannabe rappers who challenge him to have a duel. He also talks about how the raps these days only talk about women, money, car, Lamborghini, etc. Ranveer also meets naysayers who pull him down saying,'naukar ka beta naukar hi banega.'.

On the other hand, Alia Bhatt's character Safeena is bold, outspoken and courageous. She comes out with the wittiest one-liner when a woman (possibly her employer) asks whether she knows how to cook. She talks in a snazzy way to Ranveer Singh, who appears to be his love interest in the film. In one of the scenes, she is also seen smashing a glass bottle on someone's head. Her character reminds us of Udta Punjab's Mary Jane. For the unversed, Alia Bhatt played the role of a daily wage worker-turned-drug addict who is abducted, drugged and raped by druglords of Punjab.

Vijay Raaz as Ranveer's father brings the needed grit, anger and control on the screen in the scene where he is thrashing his non-conformist son for not being studious enough.

It's impressive to see how Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh are playing diverse characters in each of their film. Alia was last seen in Raazi in which she played the role of an Indian spy who is married off to a Pakistani man. She is demure but smart and the last one to be doubted at. In Gully Boy, she is wild, rebellious and is in no mood to live by anyone else's terms. Ranveer Singh played a rowdy cop in Simmba, which was a commercial film. In Gully Boy, he looks lean, defeated at some points yet determined. Both Alia and Ranveer deserve the piece of cake for their brave attempts already. Rest, only 14th February will tell!

Gully Boy is Zoya Akhtar’s next directorial project as a feature film after Dil Dhadakne Do. She also helmed a short story for Lust Stories which was featured as an anthology series on Netflix. Talking about Ranveer and Alia, the duo will reunite in Karan Johar’s Takht which is starkly different from Gully Boy. The film will release on February 14. Before its release, the Zoya Akhtar directorial will premiere at Berlin International Film Festival.
