This year’s most anticipated film, the Zoya Akhtar directorial Gully Boy is all set to release on Valentine’s Day. The film which is loosely based on the life of Mumbai street rappers Divine and Naezy, has created a lot of buzz among the fans for myriad reasons. It’s different kind of music is a breath of fresh air and a clutter-breaker amid the Bollywood remakes. Also, Ranveer Singh is seen with a lean body and in a timid personality on the silver screen after playing a Rowdy cop in Rohit Shetty’s Simmba. The film also has Alia Bhatt in female lead, who’s past record at the box office is super-impressive. Talking about the maverick director Zoya Akhtar, the filmmaker has returned to direction after helming a part of anthology Lust Stories for Netflix. To be precise, it’s her return to directing feature films after Dil Dhadakne Do in 2015.
According to the buzz and the fact that Gully Boy is releasing on Valentine’s Day, the film is expected to rake in around Rs 10-12 crore at the box office on day 1. However, the numbers are expected to rise through the weekend due to Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt’s devoted fan base and the section of cinema lovers who wait ardently for Zoya Akhtar films.
Going through the past track records of Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, both have had a flawless year in 2018. Alia Bhatt’s Raazi became a critical as well commercial hit. Before that, her Badrinath Ki Dulhania was also a mammoth hit among the masala film lovers. Ranveer Singh’s Simmba, though not praised by the critics, did leave a massive impact at the box office.
Alia Bhatt’s Raazi which release in April on a non-holiday Friday, earned Rs 7.53 crore at the box office on its day 1. However, due to strong word of mouth, the numbers rose exponentially for the weekends that followed. Ranveer Singh’s Simmba opened to Rs 22 crore at the BO, however, such kind of response is hard to expect this time since it’s a working Friday. Also, Rohit Shetty’s film has a different kind of dedicated fan base which also contributed to this gargantuan success of the cop drama.
Gully Boy, however, is expected to swiftly cross the Rs 100 crore mark in its first week itself, courtesy Ranveer Singh and Zoya Akhtar’s impeccable sense of filmmaking.
Gully Boy also has Kalki Koechlin in an important role. The maverick actress has made a mark for herself in the industry with non-masala films like Ribbon, Waiting, My Friend Pinto, Girl In Yellow Boots and many more. Also seen in supporting role is Vijay Raaz, who doesn’t need any introduction among those who closely follow Bollywood movies.
