After films such as Sanju, Race 3 and Raazi, the Akshay Kumar starrer Gold is all set to enter the Rs 100 crore club. The biopic on hockey player Tapan Das, which released on this Independence Day, opened to amazing figures of Rs 25.25 crore. The first week of the film also proved to be extremely crucial business wise earning almost Rs 79 crores. Gold, also starring Mouni Roy recorded the fifth highest first-week number of 2018, towering over John Abraham’s Satyameva Jayate, which also released on August 15.
However, the Akshay Kumar film registered a steep decline in the second weekend.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said, “#Gold registered a steep decline in Weekend 2... Will cross ₹ 100 cr mark, but, business-wise, one definitely expected bigger numbers, especially after a terrific Day 1 [#IndependenceDay: ₹ 25.25 cr]… [Week 2] Fri 1.85 cr, Sat 3.10 cr, Sun 4.75 cr. Total: ₹ 99 cr. India biz”.
In a tweet post, the film critic shared Gold’s week wise box-office business: “#Gold biz at a glance...Week 1: ₹ 89.30 cr [prolonged Week 1; 9 days; released on Wed] Weekend 2: ₹ 9.70 cr Total: ₹ 99 cr India biz.”
This means that the film will soon be the eighth Bollywood film of 2018 to hit the Rs 100 crore mark after Padmaavat, Race 3, Baaghi 2, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Raazi, and Sanju.
A historical sports drama inspired by India's first Olympic gold medal, Gold traces the "golden era" of Indian hockey through the journey of Tapan Das, a young assistant manager in 1936, who dreams of playing for an independent nation. The film also features Amit Sadh, Kunal Kapoor, Sunny Kaushal, Vineet Kumar Singh and Mouni Roy.
