Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is not an LGBTQ film, says director Shelly Chopra Dhar
Bollywood’s latest offering Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga starring Sonam Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla and Rajkummar Rao, is one of the first mainstream Indian movies to depict a same-sex love relationship. Lead actress Sonam Kapoor as Sweety is seen romancing Kuhu played by Regina Cassandra in the Shelly Chopra Dhar directorial debut film. Shelly recently opened up about the film’s bold subject and said that Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is not an LGBTQ movie and that the audience would be left disappointed is they came to watch the movie with “an expectation of seeing an LGBTQ love story”.
“It’s a film about a family, a community and a brother understanding the emotion of love. If the audience will watch it with an expectation of seeing an LGBTQ love story, they “will be disappointed because that’s not what the film is about”, Shelly Chopra Dhar was quoted as saying to Indian Express.
Furthermore, she told the daily that it’s extremely important to not make the film preachy because nobody likes to hear a lecture or be preached at. “Entertainment is the number one rule of cinema. You first entertain your audience and then within the story include a message. That’s what we tried to do. We first give you an interesting fun story with many characters and take you for a ride and then within there we have built in the message”, the filmmaker added.
Meanwhile, the star cast of the film Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Sonam Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao graced India TV's mega conclave TV Ka Dum recently and talked about the film. Veteran actress Juhi Chawla was all praises for her co-star Anil Kapoor and said that Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga was the finest performance of the actor till date. Juhi Chawla and Anil Kapoor have worked together in films such as Loafer, Andaz, Saleem-E-Ishq.
