Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor’s social drama Batti Gul Meter Chalu surprisingly failed to hit the bull’s eye among the critics as well as the audience. The box office numbers of the film are on its downward course soon after the first weekend was over. While on Monday, the numbers fell down by 50 %, on Tuesday Batti Gul Meter Chalu maintained a steady pace. On its day 5, Shree Narayan Singh’s social drama raked in Rs 2.91 crore, making the total Rs 29.33 crore. During its first week, the film managed to hit the Rs 30-crore mark.
Sharing the box office number, film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote, “#BattiGulMeterChalu Fri 6.76 cr, Sat 7.96 cr, Sun 8.54 cr, Mon 3.16 cr, Tue 2.91 cr. Total: ₹ 29.33 cr. India biz. #BGMC”
Talking about Shree Narayan Singh’s previous venture Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, the film’s business was totally in contrast with Batti Gul Meter Chalu. On its fifth day itself, the Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar-starrer earned around Rs 81 crore which is nearly thrice of what BGMC made on its day 5.
The coming week is not so favourable for Batti Gul Meter Chalu. The film will be clouded by Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma’s Sui Dhaaga and Vishal Bhardwaj’s Pataakha. It stands a remote chance to do some decent business post Friday this week.
Batti Gul Meter Chalu is a social drama based on the corruption in electricity department in India. Shahid Kapoor plays a lawyer whose life turns upside down when his childhood friend commits suicide after being slapped with an electricity bill amounting over lakhs. The film released in theatres on September 21, along with Manto.
