Amid series of controversies, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmaavat, earlier titled Padmavati, is finally releasing on January 25, 2018. The film stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in lead roles. While Deepika is all set to play the role of Rani Padmini, Shahid essays the role of Maha Rawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer plays the main antagonist, Alauddin Khilji in the period drama. With just two days left for the film to hit the cinemas, Shahid Kapoor's wife Mira Rajput, shared a still from the film, featuring the actor and captioned it as, "Spirit makes the king, not just the crown. #MaharawalRatanSingh #Padmaavat."

The movie that was to initially release on December 1, is now finally releasing in the next two days and to say that we’re excited would only be an understatement.

Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) today supported the January 25 release of Bollywood film “Padmaavat” whose scheduled screening has been stridently opposed by Rajput groups in some states.  The MNS said the protesters should respect the decision of the Supreme Court which has cleared the decks for the release of the 13th Century period drama, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

The makers have said it's a film Indians will be proud of. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Padmaavat received widespread criticism from fringe groups, after a rumour of dream sequence between Rani Padmini and Alauddin Khilji went out. The film didn’t receive certification from the CBFC owing to incomplete documents. Hence, the release date was moved from December 1, 2017 to January 25, 2018.
