This Friday Aamir Khan’s highly awaited movie ‘Dangal’ will hit theatres. Since the movie is based on wrestling and Salman Khan’s blockbuster ‘Sultan’ too had its story’s centre on this sport, comparisons between them was obvious.
With the release date coming close, trade experts have decoded if ‘Dangal’ will beat ‘Sultan’ in first day collections. According to experts, Aamir Khan racing forward than Salman is unlikely.
A trade expert told a leading daily that it is next to impossible for ‘Dangal’ to earn more than Rs 35.54 crore (Sultan’s opening day collection) on December 23. As, the expert added, the movie was released on Wednesday, a day before Eid. Though, ‘Dangal’ too is getting a solo release, attaining this massive number is less probable because it is just a normal Friday. The expert added that Aamir wouldn’t benefit much from Christmas as well, because it falls on Sunday.
Incidentally, only one of Aamir’s blockbuster movies ‘Dhoom 3’ earned more than Rs 30 crore on the first day. It was possible for the movie to earn Rs 36 crore on the first day because of the popularity of the ‘Dhoom’ franchisee and the aura it had generated over the period. But this time this doesn’t seem to happen.
Speaking about the expectations from the movie, a insider close to Aamir said that though his movies don’t see bumper first day opening, they become unstoppable on picking up pace at the box office. He said this is a reason that Mr. Perfectionist doesn’t care about first day collections.
Another insider pointed out that given Aamir’s stardom the movie will easily go past Rs 25 crore figure on first day. It would easily become the second highest opener of 2016, the position that is currently held by ‘M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story’ which minted Rs 21.3 crore on release day. He added that demonetisation factor will come to play in single screens, making a dent in the collections.
However, the movie is expected to have a tremendous run at the box office and become a blockbuster.
