UP Civic Poll Results: BJP leading on 341 seats, BSP on 116, SP on 81 in local bodies; PM Modi says 'development has triumphed'

Elections were held for 16 Municipal Corporations, 118 Municipal Council and 438 Nagar Panchayats in three phases on November 22, November 26 and November 29.

Seen as Yogi Adityanath's first acid test after taking over as Chief Minister, the BJP appears to be heading for a clear win in the UP civic poll results.

Counting of votes for the Uttar Pradesh municipal elections or Nagar Nikay Chunav 2017 began at 8 am today amid tight security. The final results will be out by the evening. Central paramilitary forces have been deployed around the counting centres. Arrangements have also been made for web casting of the counting process. 

“The counting of ballots has started in all districts on a peaceful note. The results are likely by afternoon,” State Election Commission said.

Elections were held for 16 Municipal Corporations, 118 Municipal Council and 438 Nagar Panchayats in three phases on November 22, November 26 and November 29. The overall polling percentage for all three phases stands at 52.5 per cent.

The Uttar Pradesh municipal elections are being seen as an acid test for Yogi Adityanath-led Bharatiya Janata Party's popularity.

02:58pm: BJP's Maya Tripathi loses ward no 68 in Gorakhpur. Independent candidate Nadira wins. Gorakhnath Temple is situated in this ward

02:52 pm: BJP's Maya Tripathi loses ward no 68 in Yogi Adityanath's parliamentary constituency Gorakhpur. Independent candidate Nadira wins. Gorakhnath Temple is situated in this ward.

02:45 pm: The Congress is at a poor fourth in Rahul Gandhi's parliamentary constituency Amethi, considered a party bastion. BJP candidates are leading in both Amethi town and Jais seats. While the party had not fielded any candidate from Amethi town, its candidates from Jais was at a poor fourth after several rounds of counting. In Musafirkhana, an independent Brajesh Agrahari was leading, while in Gauriganj Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Rajpati Devi was ahead of her rivals. In Jais, BJP candidate Mahesh Sonkar was leading.

 02:40 pm: BJP's mayor candidates heading for victory in Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Ayodhya, Mathura, Saharanpur and Moradabad. 

02:35 pm: The BSP's mayor candidate has won in Aligarh and is leading in Meerut. BJP nominees are ahead in Ghaziabad, Bareilly, Agra, Firozabad, Kanpur, Jhansi, Allahabad and Lucknow.

02:20 pm: Bharatiya Janta Party wins Nagar Panchayat in Amethi

02:05 pm: BJP's Sanyukta Bhatia leads in trends for Lucknow mayoral post. Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) consists of 110 wards and each ward has 10-12 localities under its formation. The present mayor of LMC is Suresh Awasthi.

01:55 pm: Blow to Rahul Gandhi as BJP registers win in Amethi, the Congress vice president's Lok Sabha constituency. Elsewhere in CM Yogi Adityanath's Gorakhpur, an independent candidate has registered a win over her rival BJP candidate. 

01:45 pm: BJP candidate Pramila Pandey wins Mayor elections in Kanpur. BJP's mayor candidates are leading in Saharanpur, Ghaziabad, Firozabad, Lucknow, Varanasi, Allahabad, Bareilly, Moradabad, Gorakhpur and Ayodhya as per initial trends. The BSP is leading in Aligarh, Meerut, Agra and Jhansi.  

01:30 pm: Trends/Results at 1.30 pm - BJP leading on 312 seats, BSP on 105, SP on 73, Congress on 19 and others on 95. BJP is leading on 13 of the 16 mayor seats.  

01:28 pm: BJP candidate Mukesh Arya wins Mathura Mayor elections 

01:10 pm: BJP Mayor candidates leading in Varanasi and Firozabad.

1:00 pm: Trends/Results at 1 pm - BJP crosses 300-mark, leading on 301 seats, BSP ahead on 102 seats. SP is on third spot with leads on 65 seats, the Congress in on 19 while others are ahead at 94 seats.

12:50 pm: Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma said the people of the state have shown full faith in the BJP and its ideology and discarded the SP, the BSP and the Congress. "The SP, the BSP and the Congress contested the polls as each other's relatives. (SP chief) Akhilesh Yadav and (Congress vice president) Rahul Gandhi, who were together during assembly polls as 'UP ke ladke' have become like the tyre and tube of a cycle and it has got punctured," Sharma said. 

12:48 pm: As per trends available, BJP candidates were leading in seats including Lucknow, Allahabad, Aligarh, Varanasi, Ghaziabad, Gorakhpur, Faizabad and Moradabad municipal corporations while the BSP was ahead in Jhansi and Agra municipal corporations. The BJP had won 10 out of 12 mayoral seats in 2012.

12:35 pm: BJP Mayor candidate from Ghaziabad Asha Sharma leads by 50,000 votes after tenth round of counting.

12:15 pm: BJP crosses 250-mark, leads on 258 seats in trends for 519 out of 652 seats. BSP ahead on 83, SP on 51, Congress on 15 and others on 112.

12:04 pm: "The BJP's victory in UP civic polls is a testament of the people's faith that Ram Temple will be built in Ayodhya. All credit to CM Yogi Adityanath," says Subramanian Swamy.

12:00 pm: Trends at 12 pm - BJP maintains lead, ahead on 207 seats. BSP on second spot with leads on 79 seats, SP on 42 and Congress on 15. Others, that include independent candidates and smaller parties, are emerging as big winners with 169 seats.     

11:56 am: BSP leads from Meerut, Agra and Jhansi in Mayor elections. BJP ahead on 13.

11:50 am: Lathicharge by Police on crowd gathered outside counting centre in Muzaffarnagar. Four people injured, reports ANI.

11:49 am: BJP leading in Rahul Gandhi's Lok Sabha constituency Amethi, Congress on fourth spot. ​

11:48 am: BJP candidate Meera Agarwal wins the lucky draw. BJP and Congress both had got 874 votes in Ward no 56 in Mathura.

11:44 am: BSP leading Mayor elections in Agra and Jhansi, BJP second 

11:42 am: BJP's Keshav Prasad Maurya speaks to India TV, counters Opposition's charge that the BJP went all-out in the civic polls as it was scared of a backlash. "Why would we have gone in the midst of the people if we had anything to fear? Those who were scared never went to the people."

10:26 am: BSP's Digambar Singh leads Agra mayoral race by 4,000 votes. BJP's Abhilasha Gupta ahead by 4,000 votes in Allahabad.

10:23 am: Yogi Adityanath seems to have retained his sway over the electorate so far. BJP is leading on 12 out of 16 mayoral seats. Of the 118 municipal councils, BJP is leading on 50.    

10:21 am: BJP's Asha Sharma regains lead in mayoral race in Ghaziabad from BSP.

10:20 am: BSP now leading on six out of 10 mayoral seats, BJP ahead on 10

09:53 am: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's whirlwind campaign across the state signified the importance the party was attaching to the civic polls after the landslide victory in the Assembly elections and appears to be yielding results. Almost two hours into counting, the BJP is leading on 111 seats out of the 224 seats for which trends are available. Samajwadi Party could turn out to be the biggest upset with BSP emerging as the party  with the second highest tally.

09:38 am: BJP extends lead to 49 seats, BSP unsettles SP on second spot with leads on 22 seats. SP trains at third on 16. BJP ahead in 13 of 16 mayoral seats.

09:34 am: First result - BJP draws first blood, Ajay Rai wins from Gorakhpur's Ward No 69.

09:33 am: BJP Mayor candidate leading by over 1000 votes in Moradabad, BSP second, SP third and Congress fourth. BJP also leading in Pilibhit

09:30 am: Trends for 91 of 652 seats at 9.30 am - BJP extends lead to 44, BSP now leads on 19, SP leading on 16, Congress 5 and Others 7.

09:27 am: BSP leading now on Ferozabad after first round of counting. SP was leading the mayoral seat here.  

09:25 am: BJP regains lead on Mathura mayoral seat. 

09:21 am: Mathura, Saharanpur and now Jhansi! BSP's Brajesh Kumar leads BJP's mayoral candidate by 660 votes after first round of counting. BJP was leading from this seat. 

09:15 am: Samajwadi Party is trailing behind BSP on many seats. This could be a big upset for the SP and Akhilesh Yadav's decision not to campaign in the polls could be a major factor in the drubbing. Notably, even Mayawati spent most of her time in Delhi and the candidates were left to fight for themselves. 

09:12 am: In PM Narendra Modi's constituency Varanasi, BJP's Mridula Jaiswal leads mayoral race by 1,000 votes at end of first round of counting. 

09:09 am: Another jolt to BJP after Saharanpur, Congress now leading from Mathura, BJP trailing at second spot.

09:07 am: BJP leading mayoral race in Yogi Adityanath's Lok Sabha constituency Gorakhpur. 

09:03 am: BSP now leading on mayoral seat in Saharanpur, BJP on second spot.  

09:00 am: Trends at 9 am - BJP now leading on 31, SP on 12, BSP on 7, Congress on 2, Others on 4. BJP leads from Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Kanpur and Faizabad. 

08:58 am: BSP closes in on BJP in the mayoral race in Ghaziabad. Early trends showed BJP gaining clear lead. Neck to neck fight expected here.

08:55 am: BJP now leading on 28 seats, SP on 9, BSP on 5, Congress on 2 and independent candidates on 4 seats  

08:53 am: BJP appears to be consolidating its lead in mayoral elections. Samajwadi Party is on a distant second as far as early trends suggest. BSP trails behind with leads on 5 seats so far. Congress has opened its tally in leads and is now ahead on 2 seats.  

08:48 am: Trends at 8.45 am - BJP leading on 27 seats, SP on 9, BSP on 5, Congress on 2 and independent candidates on 3 seats

08:38 am: BJP leading from Dhampur seat in Bijnor and Fatehpur. SP leads from Kannauj and Auraiya. 

08:30 am: Trends at 8.30 am. BJP leading on 14, SP on 3 and BSP on 2. Congress yet to open tally.

06:35 am: A total of 3.32 crore voters from all 75 districts exercised their franchise at 36,269 polling booths and 11,389 polling stations in Uttar Pradesh during these elections.

06:29 am: This is for the first time in the municipal elections in Uttar Pradesh that the winners will get an SMS informing them about the victory on their respective seat.

06:28 am: In the first phase of polling 52.59 per cent voting was recorded on November 22 with Congress bastion Amethi logging a high turnout of 68.44 per cent and Adityanath's home turf Gorakhpur registering the lowest poll percentage.

06:27 am: The second phase of the polls saw 49.3 per cent polling on November 26. A total of 1.3 crore electors in 25 districts were eligible to exercise their franchise in the second phase. In 2012, the polling percentage in these districts was 43.67.

06:25 am: The last and final phase of local body elections saw 53 per cent polling on November 29.

06:24 am: In 2012 civic polls, the BJP had swept civic body elections. The saffron party had won 10 out of 12 mayoral posts. The party emerged victorious in Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Kanpur, Meerut, Agra, Gorakhpur, Moradabad, Aligarh, Jhansi and Varanasi Municipal Corporations. The SP candidate won the Bareilly seat while a BSP supported candidate emerged victorious in Allahabad.
