In a set back for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Jharkhand, the saffron party on Thursday lost Silli Assembly bypoll. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha's Sima Mahto won the bypoll by over 13,000 votes. The bypoll in Silli was necessitated after sitting MLA Amit Mahto of the JMM was convicted in a criminal assault case in March.
In 2014, Amit had defeated All Jharkhand Students Union chief Sudesh Mahto, who had held the seat for over 10 years.
Of the 10 candidates in fray, the main contest is between the former deputy chief minister and AJSU president Sudesh Mahto, and Seema Mahto, the wife of disqualified MLA Amit Mahto.
