The polling for the Maheshtala assembly constituency in West Bengal is currently underway. As per latest inputs, 70.01 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 5 am.
The Maheshtala Assembly seat of South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal became vacant after the death of the two-time representative Kasturi Das of TMC in February this year. The seat had been a CPM stronghold till 2011 when it lost to the Trinamool Congress, which grabbed power in the state. In 2016, she returned to defeat the party again by 12,452 votes.

TMC has roped in Dulal Das, husband of Kasturi Das for the by-poll. BJP has pitched in Sujit Kumar Ghosh. However, Congress has decided to extend its support for the CPI(M) candidate Prabhat Chowdhury for Monday's bypolls.
The two parties had forged a coalition in Bengal for the 2016 assembly elections but parted ways after the CPI(M) central committee said the alliance was “not in consonance with the party line adopted in 2015”, reported PTI.
The bypoll results for assembly elections will be declared on 31 May.
