By-election in Meghalaya's Ampati underway; Congress eyes victory to become single largest party

Election to Ampati was necessitated following former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma who won from both Ampati and Songsak seats decided to leave the Ampati seat.

The by-election assumes significance especially to the Congress party as its ambitions to emerge as the single largest party in Meghalaya depends solely on the outcome of the polls.

By-election for Ampati, the assembly constituency of former Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma is currently underway.  Sangma, now Leader of Opposition in the Meghalaya Assembly, had won from two seats - Ampati and Songsak - in the February 27 assembly election. 

Election to Ampati was necessitated following former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma who won from both Ampati and Songsak seats decided to leave the Ampati seat. Congress has fielded Mukul’s daughter Miani D Shira as the candidate. 

The by-election assumes significance especially to the Congress party as its ambitions to emerge as the single largest party in Meghalaya depends solely on the outcome of the polls.

The bypoll results for assembly elections will be declared on 31 May.
