Results for Assembly bypolls on 10 Assembly seats in separate states are out and it seems that a united opposition has managed to dent the BJP to a great extent. While the Samajwadi Party has won from Noorpur in Uttar Pradesh, the RJD has registered an overwhelming victory in Jokihat, Bihar. The Congress has won Shahkot seat in Punjab.
With the Lok Sabha elections nearly 12 months away, the results of Assembly bypolls are being observed closely by the political parties involved and people in general.
The ten Assembly seats where bypolls were held are: are Jokihat (Bihar), Gomia and Silli (Jharkhand), Chengannur (Kerala), Ampati (Meghalaya), Shahkot (Punjab), Tharali (Uttarakhand), Noorpur (Uttar Pradesh), Palus-Kadegaon (Maharashtra) and Mahestala (West Bengal).
The Congress has registered victory on four Assembly seats - Shahkot (Punjab) , Palus Kadegaon (Maharashtra), Ampati (Meghalaya) and RR Nagar (Karnataka). While Nitish Kumar's JD(U) slumped to a defeat to RJD in Bihar's Jokihat, Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party won the Noorpur Assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh.
On the other hand, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) retained both Silli and Gomia assembly seats in the by-election. In Gomia, JMM's candidate Babita Devi defeated AJSU nominee Lambodar Mahto by 13,00 votes while BJP's nominee Madhavlal Singh stood third on the seat. In Silli, JMM's Seema Mahto defeated AJSU chief and former state Deputy Chief Minister Sudesh Mahto by 13,000 votes.
In Kerala’s Chengannur, the CPM registered a massive win with its candidate Saji Cherian winning by over 20,000 votes. For the BJP, the only win came in Uttarakhand where it won the Tharali Assembly seat.

In Bihar's Jokihat Assembly seat, the fight is between Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the party which is now being helmed by Tejashwi Yadav in the absence of his father Lalu Yadav after conviction in Fodder Scam cases. The Jokihat seat fell after JD(U) MLA Sarfaraz Alam quit the party to contest Araria Lok Sabha bypoll on RJD ticket. Alam's younger brother is now contesting the Assembly bypoll on RJD ticket.
The RJD is primarily concentrating on highlighting what it describes as 'betrayal' by Nitish Kumar to walk out of the grand alliance or Mahagathbandhan in July last year.
In Jharkhand, by elections were held on two seats - Gomia and Silli. The by polls were held following the conviction of respective JMM MLAs, Yogendra Mahto and Amit Mahto in separate cases. While the JMM would like to retain the seats, the ruling BJP is also eyeing to win the seats to strengthen its position in Jharkhand Assembly.
A fierce contest is expected between the three fronts of the Left, the BJP and the Congress on Chengannur seat in Kerala. About 74.60 per cent voting was recorded in the bypoll, necessitated due to death of sitting MLA K K Ramachandran Nair of CPI(M).
Meghalaya's Ampati by-election, where polling was the highest at 90.42 per cent, was necessitated as the state's Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma resigned from the seat after winning from Songsak seat as well. His daughter Miani D Shira is in a triangular contest there.
The Shahkot bypoll in Punjab was necessitated by demise of Akali MLA Ajit Singh Kohar. His son Naib Singh Kohar is the Akali candidate, while Congress has fielded Hardev Singh Laddi and AAP candidate is Rattan Singh Kakkar Kalan.
After suffering a set back in Gorakhpur Lok Sabha bypoll and Phulpur Assembly bypoll, the BJP is hoping for a better show in Noorpur where bypoll was necessitated following the death of sitting BJP MLA Lokendra Singh Chauhan. The saffron party has fielded his wife Avani Singh, while Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party is also in the fray via its candidate Naeemul Hasan.
The Assembly bypoll in Maharashtra's Palus-Kadegaon was being seen as litmus test for the future of BJP-Shiv Sena alliance in the state. However, the BJP withdrew its candidate against Congress nominee Vishwakeet Kadam making his election a mere formality now. Kadam had the backing of both the Nationalist Congress party (NCP) and the Shiv Sena as well.
In Uttarkhand's Tharali, there is a direct contest between the BJP and the Congress. On the other hand, in West Bengal's Maheshtala, there is a three-dimensional contest between the Trinamool, the Left and the BJP.
By-election in Maheshtala was held following death of TMC MLA Kasturi Das. Mamata Banerjee's party has fielded her husband Dulal Das, while BJP has fielded Sujit Ghosh, a former CBI joint director. The Left candidate Prabhat Chowdhury is backed by Congress.
