Govind Singh is the present Leader of Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly. The Congress leader replaced Kamal Nath as the Leader of Opposition in 2022. Singh also served as the Madhya Pradesh Minister of Cooperatives, Parliamentary Affairs and General Administration under Chief Minister Kamal Nath between 2018 and 2020. Govind Singh has been a member of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly since 1990. He won multiple Assembly elections in 1990, 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008, 2013 and 2018. In 1990, Singh won the election from Lahar by defeating Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Mathura Prasad Mahant. He again defeated Mahant in 1993 and 1998. Govind Singh won the Lahar constituency in 2003 and 2008 by defeating Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidates Ramashankar Singh and Romesh Mahant. In 2013 and 2018, Singh defeated BJP's Rasal Singh to retain his seat. Govind Singh is again contesting from Lahar against BJP candidate Ambrish Sharma.
