Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has claimed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) brought back dignity and respect to Muslim women by banning triple talaq. He further asked them to recognise their "true brothers" as he referred to the Centre's step.

While addressing the people of Aonla on Wednesday, Yogi said that India might have got political independence in 1947 but Muslim women got independence only recently -- after the abolition of triple talaq.

“While the country got political independence in 1947, our Muslim sisters got their actual independence only after the abolition of the evil practice of triple talaq, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi was responsible for it. We have freed our Muslim sisters from centuries of abuse and captivity.

They were being exploited in the name of triple talaq. BJP government has restored their dignity and respect by ending this evil practice… I urge my Muslim sisters to recognise their true brothers,” he said in the rally.

Adityanath also targetted Congress chief Rahul Gandhi for his promises on AFSPA and sedition law (section 124-A) and alleged him of being anti-national.

“The Congress is suffering from 'green virus'. At Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s Wayanad road show, there was just greenery (referring to green flags of the Indian Union Muslim League)."
