Derek O'Brien: Goons brought by Amit Shah vandalised Vidyasagar bust, calls BJP chief 'liar'

Senior Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien has blamed BJP Chief Amit Shah for the vandalisation of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar's iconic bust in the premises of Calcutta University.

Derek O'Brien also went on to call Amit Shah a "liar".

"We are showing you video proof that shows how goons brought by Amit Shah created a scuffle," Derek O'Brien said.

The TMC leader showed a video to media persons calling it a "visual proof" that shows how the icon of Bengal renaissance was smashed. "Wikipedia won't make you understand Vidyasagar," Derek said.

Derek O'Brien also questioned the need for calling "outsiders" to Kolkata. "Anybody can come and do a procession. We live in Calcutta, we are a cosmopolitan city. But who are these outsiders.....Who is this fellow Tejinder Bagga? Who is he? He was arrested, is he not the same guy who slapped somebody in Delhi? You have taken in your outsider goons."

Tejinder Bagga is a spokesperson of Delhi state BJP. Bagga was detained by Kolkata Police last night from his hotel but released later on.

Earlier, after returning to Delhi from Kolkata, the BJP chief addressed the media where he blamed the TMC workers for carrying out violence during his massive road show. "Attempts at election rigging are happening in West Bengal but the Election Commission has remained a mute spectator. It should intervene," Amit Shah said during the press conference.

"The Election Commission has been a mute spectator. Everywhere in the country history-sheeters are apprehended ahead of polls. But in West Bengal, they are roaming free... Not a single one has been caught so far. I seriously question the Election Commission's neutrality in Bengal," the BJP chief said.

"The Commission has been part from the very beginning of the elections in the state," he said. "I don't have any hope that the Election Commission will work impartially in West Bengal."
