Robert Vadra on Tuesday said that Congress general secretary from eastern Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi is ready to fight against Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Varanasi Lok Sabha seat.

“Priyanka is ready to fight from Varanasi. She is ready for whatever party decides. People of the country want change. They want a new leader,” Robert Vadra told reporters.

Priyanka Gandhi has raised speculation regarding contesting from Varanasi in the past as well. On March 28, urged by Congress workers to contest from Rae Bareli, Priyanka Gandhi had asked, "Why not Varanasi?"

However, there is no official confirmation from the party yet. The Congress at present has just two representatives from Uttar Pradesh – Rahul Gnadhi from Amethi and Sonia Gandhi from Raebareli.

The BJP is yet to respond to Robert Vadra’s comment on Priyanka Gandhi fighting Modi in Varanasi.

Earlier, Sunday, Priyanka Gandhi had directly attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi by saying that he had no time for Varanasi. “Modiji has a lot of time to visit America, Africa, Japan and other countries but he doesn’t have even five minutes time to visit Varanasi,” Priyanka had said.

She has been Congress' center of attention since she was elevated to the general secretary post in February.

PM Modi is all set to file nomination papers from Varanasi on April 26. PM Modi, who is seeking a second term from Varanasi, will also hold a roadshow in Varanasi on April 25, a day ahead of filing his nomination papers.

Voting in Varanasi will be held May 19. Election results will be declared on May 23.

Polling in Uttar Pradesh is being held in seven phases.
