Smriti Irani, who is making headlines on Lok Sabha Election Results for leading at the Amethi seat against Congress' Rahul Gandhi is the current Textile Minister in the Government of India. Rahul Gandhi has been winning in Amethi effortlessly since 2004. This time, he is trailing behind Smriti Irani by large margin of votes, which came as a huge blow for Congress in this Lok Sabha Elections. Interesting Facts about Smriti Irani

Smriti Irani was born to a Bengali mother Shibani Bagchi and Punjabi-Maharashtrian father Ajay Kumar Malhotra. 

She has been a part of RSS from childhood since her grandfather was an RSS Swayamsevak. 

Smriti Irani has been one of the participants of the beauty pageant Miss India 1998, however she couldn't make up to the Top 10. In 1998, she appeared in a Mika Singh song Boliyan. 

In 2000, Smriti Irani made her television debut with Aatish and Huma Hain Kal Aaj Aur Kal on Star Plus. She rose to fame with her character Tulsi Virani in Ekta Kapoor's daily soap Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. 

Smriti Irani won five consecutive awards by Indian Television Academy for Best Actress. In 2007, she left Ekta Kapoor's show. 

Smriti Irani joined Bharatiya Janata Party in 2003. In 2004 General Elections, she contested against Kapil Sibal from Chandni Chowk although she failed to succeed. 

In 2014, she lost the Amethi constituency against Rahul Gandhi by a large margin. In May 2014, she was appointed as Minister of Human Resource Developement in Narendra Modi's cabinet. 

In 2016, Smriti Irani was given Ministry of Textiles after taking away the HRD Ministry from her. In 2017, she was handed the additional charge of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting only to be replaced by Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore in 2018.
