Just six months before the Lok Sabha elections 2019, Gujarat Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and urged all "pro-poor progressive forces" to keep aside their ideological differences so that the battle against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could be won.
He also termed the Modi government as "fascist".

"All pro-poor progressive forces, pro-Constitution and pro-democracy forces must come together keeping their ideological and other differences aside against the fascist BJP government,” IANS quoted Mevani as saying after meeting Banerjee at the state secretariat on Monday.
Commenting about his meeting with WB CM, Mevani said it was a courtesy call.
The Dalit leader said he visited Bengal to meet tribals and Dalits.
