DUSU election 2024 highlights: More than 1.45 lakh students cast votes, counting on Oct 21

Polling for the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections concluded on Friday with more than 1.45 lakh students casting their votes.

On Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections, Yagywalkya Shukla, National General Secretary, ABVP says, " ...The way the feedback of our workers is coming, in this election, students are extending great support to all 4 candidates of ABVP...ABVP will defeat NSUI on all 4 posts...last time whatever promises we made, we worked for that throughout the year so voting is taking place in favour of ABVP..."

An exercise was launched on Friday to remove all posters and banners put up by student organisations across Delhi University north campus for DUSU poll campaign. The action comes a day after the Delhi High Court halted the counting of votes of Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections till all the defacement material, including posters, hoarding and graffiti, is removed and public property is restored, reported PTI.

The Delhi High Court has said officials of Delhi University and its colleges have failed to appreciate the true import of the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines which prohibit defacement of public property and use of printed posters during the students union elections. The court said the officials of Delhi University and colleges have neglected the enforcement of the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines, reported PTI.

To cast vote, the second and final year students are required to present a valid Delhi University ID card. No other forms of ID will be accepted.

The Phase 2 voting for the Delhi University Students' Union election is underway and expected to conclude by 7:30 PM.

Evening class students will cast their votes for the DUSU elections 2024 from 3 pm to 7.30 pm.

As per reports, around 1.40 lakh students are eligible to vote for DUSU Election 2024.

The phase 1 voting for the Delhi University Students' Union election has concluded for the morning shift. Now, the evening shift will cast their votes in the second shift from 3 pm to 7.30 pm.

A scuffle broke out between NSUI's joint secretary candidate Lokesh Chaudhary and the in-charge teacher at a polling station at the Law Center-2 in DU's North Campus.

The manifesto of NSUI emphasises a 'student-first' approach, focussing on improving campus facilities, securing fair opportunities for all students, ensuring transparent examinations, and amplifying student voices in the decision-making processes

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) released an 11-point manifesto for the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections. The manifesto involves the admission process, campus infrastructure, examinations and employment-oriented education. It also highlights plans to create a better grievance redressal system and improve safety measures for the students.

Ronak Khatri, Yash Nandal, Namrata JEPH (Meena), and Lokesh Chaudhary are contesting from NSUI for the central panel positions.

The Lyngdoh Committee guidelines, which govern student elections in universities across India, aim to ensure fair practices, including limits on campaign spending and the prohibition of defacement of public property. This move comes in response to the High Court's concerns over defacement and misuse of funds during the DUSU election campaign. On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court expressed strong disapproval of public authorities for their inaction to the widespread vandalism and property defacement across Delhi during the run-up to the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections. The court was particularly critical of the inaction by Delhi University and the election authorities, emphasising that they have the power to take concrete action against those responsible for violating rules and damaging public property.

In its remarks, the bench questioned the enormous amount of money being spent by the candidates during the elections, suggesting that such expenditures raised concerns about transparency and fairness. The court also specifically directed that all spray-painted walls and other forms of vandalism must be cleaned up. The court further emphasised that the Vice Chancellor must take these issues seriously, and if necessary, the polls could be annulled. The court had earlier expressed strong displeasure over the large-scale vandalism and defacement of public property during the election campaign and had warned of possible action, including the deferment of the DUSU polls, if the situation was not rectified. The authorities' commitment to engage with stakeholders suggests that a solution is being sought to comply with the court's concerns before the next hearing.

The Delhi High Court on Thursday (September 26) allowed Delhi University (DU) to continue with the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections but has imposed a crucial condition- barring the university from counting votes until it satisfies the court that all posters, hoardings, graffiti, and other campaign-related materials have been removed and public property has been restored. 

The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) earlier demanded that the Delhi University administration and the Delhi Police ensure fair and transparent conduct of the students' union elections.

Rishabh, Bhanu, Mitravinda and Aman are contesting from ABVP for the positions of president, vice president, secretary and joint secretary for DUSU 2024-25.

The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) earlier demanded that the Delhi University administration and the Delhi Police ensure fair and transparent conduct of the students' union elections.

Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections are currently taking place. Voting for day classes has started at 8:30 am and will conclude at 1 pm; for the evening shift, it will be from 3 pm to 7:30 pm.
