Lakhs of engineering aspirants are set to give online main exam for the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) today. The three-hour long computer-based test for JEE Main will determine the aspirants' chance to earn a seat in an IIT or an NIT. The students have been preparing for this test for months, and some for even years, but it is good to take a moment and strategise before a competitive examination of this stature.
Here are some last minutes tips before JEE Mains 2018:
Understand the online exam pattern:
This is an online exam which is different from the conventional paper-and- pen exam. In the online format – a simple, uncomplicated interface presents the questions on a computer screen and candidates are given an unlimited supply of rough sheets to carry out the calculations. This is unlike the paper-and-pen version, where the candidate is expected to utilize the limited available blank space for rough work judiciously.
Another significant factor is that the interface constantly displays both the number of unattempted questions as well as the remaining time. This allows candidates to track their progress and allocate time wisely. Hence, it is pragmatic and wise to get used to the format via mock tests.
Don't forget your Admit card
Don’t forget to carry your admit card in any case. It will carry details such as your roll number, examination centre name, exam duration etc. Keep in mind that without it you will not be allowed to appear for the exam.
No last minute study
As only few hours are left for the exam, do not try to study a new topic or chapter. This will only create more confusion and may affect your performance. Just focus on your strong points and areas about which you are 100 per cent confident. If required just go through the footnotes of those very important points which you think are of vital importance.
Leave on time
Leave your home on time the next day. It is always better to reach the venue before the scheduled time than reaching late and missing out on giving the paper. Candidates are advised to reach the venue at least 2.5 hours before the examination in order to complete the frisking and registration formalities before time. The registration desk will be closed five minutes prior to the examination.
Banned items
Candidates are not allowed to carry electronic devices such as mobile phone, calculator, electronic watches with facilities of calculator etc. Materials like log table, book, notebook, etc. are also not allowed into the examination hall. Other things which are prohibited are any textual material, slide rules, log tables, printed or written material and bits of papers.
Don’t carry pens
Ball pens will be provided to the candidates in the examination hall so they should not carry any type of pen/ball pens with them.
Choice of medium
The candidates should make sure that the question paper available on the computer is according to his/her choice of medium. If not, they approach the invigilator concerned.
Rough sheets
Rough sheets will be provided for doing all calculations/writing work. After the test is complete the candidates must hand over the same to the invigilator on duty in the room/hall.
Final pointers
Pay attention to the type of questions that have been asked in the paper-and- pen version(s). It is reasonable to assume that the online version of JEE wouldn’t be too different from its conventional counterpart. Hence, the candidate can gather clues to the type of questions and length of the different sections of the exam.
