An MP-MLA court in Uttar Pradesh's Sultanpur, on Thursday, issued a bailable warrant against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh, due to his absence from the hearing of a three-year-old case concerning violations of Covid-19 norms. According to Special Public Prosecutor Vaibhav Pandey, Singh has missed multiple hearings in the past, prompting Magistrate Shubham Verma to issue the warrant.

The case dates back to an FIR lodged against Singh on April 13, 2021. The Rajya Sabha MP is accused of organising a meeting for the AAP in Hasanpur village, which was attended by 50-60 people without the required permissions. This gathering allegedly violated the Epidemic Diseases Act and other relevant laws, as stated by Pandey. Singh's repeated absences from the court have now resulted in the issuance of a bailable warrant to ensure his appearance at future proceedings.

After investigation, police filed a chargesheet in the court against Sanjay Singh, Maqsood Ansari, Salim Ansari, Jagdish Yadav, Maqsood, Sukai, Dharmaraj, Zeeshan, Sehban, Sikandar, Jalil and Ajay.  The other accused in the case have got bail but Singh has missed several hearings, including the one on Thursday, he said. Pandey said the next hearing in the case is on June 29.

Sanjay Singh out on bail

It should be mentioned here that Singh is currently out on bail in connection to the Delhi Excise Policy case. He was granted bail by the Supreme Court on April 2 this year. Singh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on October 4, 2023, in connection with his alleged involvement in the framing and implementation of the now-defunct Delhi Excise Policy, which the central agency claims favoured specific liquor entities.
