Parts of Delhi experienced heavy rain today, providing relief from the intense heatwave that has gripped the city. Visuals from news agency ANI showed significant downpours in areas such as Munirka and Sarita Vihar. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted additional showers during the day.

IMD forecasts more rain

At 7:30 AM, the IMD posted on X, predicting "light to moderate intensity rain and gusty winds with speeds of 30-40 Km/h over and adjoining areas of a few places in Delhi during the next two hours." Rain is also expected in Ghaziabad, Noida, and Gurugram.

Heatwave impact

Delhi has been enduring a severe heatwave, recording nine heatwave days in June, in contrast to none in 2023 and 2022. The current downpour brings much-needed respite from the sweltering conditions.

Monsoon arrival imminent

The monsoon is expected to arrive in Delhi by the end of this week, according to Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather Services. He forecasted that the monsoon would reach the city on June 29 or 30. However, the IMD has not yet confirmed the exact date for the monsoon's arrival. Typically, the monsoon enters Delhi between June 27 and June 29, with last year’s showers arriving on June 26 and the first monsoon rain of 2022 recorded on June 30.
