As many as two people died due to uprooting of tree in Delhi, while 17 were injured after buildings suffered damages following a massive dust storm caused by the sudden change of weather in the National Capital Region on Friday evening, the police said. Six people had sustained injuries due to tree uprooting in the capital city.
The Delhi Police had received 152 calls related to tree uprooting, 55 calls related to building damage, and 202 calls related to power disruption.
Duststorm in Delhi-NCR
A huge dust storm and thunderstorm struck Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Friday evening, in which winds with speed of 50-70 Km/h blew.
"Duststorm/ thunderstorm with rain (followed by rain) and gusty winds with speed of 50-70 Km/h would occur over and adjoining areas of entire Delhi and NCR (Loni Dehat, Hindon AF Station, Ghaziabad, Indirapuram, Chhapraula, Noida, Dadri, Greater Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad," the India Meteorological Department said in a post on X.
The duststorm, which affected the visibility, caused the delay and diversion of several flights at the IGI airport in Delhi.
IMD prediction
Several parts of the country are likely to witness a wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. "Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely over Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan during the next 3 hours," IMD posted on X.
The weather department also predicted light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning also likely over south Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and west Uttar Pradesh. "Light rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms and lightning is also likely over south Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh, Meghalaya, south-east Arunachal Pradesh, south-east Assam, Manipur, south interior Karnataka and Kerala during the next 3 hours," it added.
