Delhi govt announces Rs 10 lakh compensation for families of those who died due to heavy rains

The national capital on Saturday reported six rain-related deaths, taking to 11 the toll in the first two days since Monsoon hit the city. On Friday (June 28), five people died due to heavy rains.

After the record-breaking rainfall lashed the national capital, the Delhi government on Sunday announced to provide a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of those who drowned due to heavy rain on Friday.

In an official communication to the revenue department, Delhi Finance Minister Atishi said, “It has been reported that there were several deaths due to drowning on June 28, after the extreme rainfall.

"It is hereby directed that the families of all those who lost their lives shall be provided a compensation of Rs 10 lakh," Atishi added in the order.

"ACS Revenue is hereby directed to identify those who lost their lives with the support of area hospitals and Delhi Police - and to immediately provide them aforementioned compensation on behalf of GNCTD," she added.

Meanwhile, Atishi also took to social media platform X with the announcement. In a post on X, she said, "Several deaths have been reported on 28th June, after extreme rainfall of 228mm in 24 hours. The families of all those who lost their lives will be given a compensation of ₹10 lakhs. Directions have been given that this compensation reaches the grieving families speedily."

Mayor Shelly Oberoi inspected water logging 

After weeks of sweltering heatwaves, Delhi witnessed monsoon rains on Friday. Delhi received 228.1 mm rainfall on the first day, the highest since June 1936 for June. The incessant rainfall led to water logging in many parts of Delhi, including the Lutyens, where the water entered the houses of parliamentarians and ministers. Meanwhile, visuals of underpasses being filled with rainwater also went viral. On Sunday, Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi, along with MCD officials and local councillor & MLA inspected the Kishanganj area of ​​Sadar Bazar Assembly regarding water logging issues.

Casualties due to rainfall

In two days of monsoon rains, as many as 11 people lost their lives. Some of the major incidents include, two boys drowned in a waterlogged underpass in northwest Delhi's Badli on Saturday. The underpass was flooded following heavy rains on Friday.

In Okhla, a 60-year-old man Digvijay Kumar Chaudhary died after he got stuck with his scooter in a waterlogged underpass.

Moreover, the bodies of three labourers were pulled out from the rubble of a wall that collapsed at an under-construction site in the Vasant Vihar area amid heavy rain on June 28, officials said.
