Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, currently incarcerated, has written to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena requesting that Minister Atishi be allowed to hoist the flag on his behalf during the Independence Day celebrations on August 15, sources revealed on Wednesday. Earlier this week, the Delhi High Court dismissed Kejriwal's plea challenging his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Excise Policy matter, stating the arrest had justifiable grounds. The court advised Kejriwal to seek further relief from the trial court regarding his bail application.

AAP's announcement

"Kejriwal has written to (Lieutenant Governor V K) Saxena from jail saying that Atishi will hoist the tricolour in his place on August 15," the AAP said. The Delhi government's Independence Day celebration, typically held at Chhatrasal Stadium, will see Atishi stepping in for Kejriwal, who usually addresses the audience at this annual event.

Independence Day celebrations

India is set to celebrate its 77th Independence Day with the 'Amrit Mahotsav' on August 15, 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the National Flag at the Red Fort.

Safety advisory

Ahead of the festivities, BSES has issued an advisory on kite flying, urging the public to avoid using metal or metal-coated manjha to ensure safe celebrations. A BSES official stated, "Each year, numerous power disruptions and equipment damage incidents occur due to metal-coated manjha. With the upcoming Independence Day celebrations, there is an expected increase in kite-flying activities, potentially leading to more incidents."

Bail plea dismissed

The Delhi High Court dismissed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's plea challenging his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Excise Policy case on Monday. The court ruled that there was a justifiable reason for Kejriwal's arrest. As for his bail application, the court disposed of it, allowing Kejriwal to seek further relief from the trial court.
