Delhi Airport Terminal 1 shut down for repair, all flights shifted to T1, T2: Aviation Ministry | DETAILS

A portion of a canopy covering the departure area collapsed on parked cars amid three hours of heavy rain in the national capital on Friday morning, leading to the death of a cab driver while also leaving several others injured.

The Delhi Airport Terminal 1, where the portion of roof collapsed on Friday morning due to rain leading to a death, has been shut down for passengers for the repair work, the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation said on Saturday (June 29), adding that all flights scheduled from the terminal have been shifted to Terminal 2 and 2.

The flight operations have already begun from Terminals 2 and 3 starting Saturday.

The Ministry said that flights being operated from Terminal 1 will be operational for "a few more days" from the other two terminals and it will take some days more for T1 to be fully restored.

"Flights scheduled for Delhi Airport Terminal 1 have been shifted to Terminals 2 and 3. Operations from Terminals 2 and 3 of Delhi Airport have begun from today. After the incident at Delhi Airport Terminal 1, operations from T1 are completely shut down. For a few more days, flights scheduled for Delhi Airport Terminal 1 will be operated from T2 and T3. It will take a few more days for Delhi Airport Terminal 1 to be fully restored," the Ministry said.

Airport roof collapse amid heavy rainfall 

Ramesh Kumar, a cab driver, was waiting for some passengers at the Terinal-1 of Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Friday morning (June 28) when a portion of a canopy covering the departure area collapsed on parked cars amid three hours of heavy rain in the national capital. Six people were also injured in the incident, prompting authorities to suspend flight departures.

Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu, who visited the airport and took stock of the situation at T1, announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the family.

According to the officials, the incident occurred around 5:00 am on Friday. "Due to heavy rain since early this morning, a portion of the canopy at the old Departure forecourt of Delhi Airport's Terminal 1 collapsed," the officials said.
