Civil Aviation Minister Naidu reviews operations at Delhi Airport following canopy collapse incident

Days after one person lost his life and eight others were injured in a canopy collapse incident at Delhi Airport's Terminal 1, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu visited the Airport Operations Control Centre to review current operations and passenger handling.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Minister provided details of the meeting held amid the suspension of all flight operations at Terminal 1, which have been shifted to Terminals 2 and 3 following the tragic accident.

He said, "Inspected the AOCC, IGI Airport, and convened with senior officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, DGCA, BCAS, DIAL, and airline operators to review current operations and passenger handling following the transition of flights from T1 to T2 and T3."


Moreover, the Minister speaking further also informed that ensuring seamless operations at the airport and prioritizing passenger safety were the issues deliberated during the meeting.

"The DGCA confirmed the activation of war rooms, facilitating close coordination between DIAL and the airlines. I have advised all stakeholders to maintain rigorous standards to ensure seamless operations and prioritize passenger safety," he said. 

Meanwhile, it is pertinent to note that in the wake of the canopy collapse incident on Friday, which claimed one life while leaving several others injured, flight operations have been suspended at Delhi Airport's Terminal 1, till further notice. While, as authorities continue to remove debris from the site, a full structural assessment will also be held.

Earlier, the Civil Aviation Minister speaking of the decision mentioned that a special team from IIT Delhi's structural department has been roped in. He said, they will submit their initial findings, and based on it a decision will be taken. 

"We don't want a similar incident to happen again, so we have brought in a special team from IIT Delhi's structural department. They will give an initial inspection report, and based on that, necessary action will be taken...to ensure that we are getting a structural preliminary inspection done at all airports, we have sought a report from all the airports across the country within 2-5 days..," he added.
