As the accused was trying to escape, people caught hold of him and thrashed him. Both the victim and the accused were admitted to the AIIMS where the former succumbed to her injuries during treatment, the officer said.

The condition of the accused is stable and he has been put under arrest, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Chinmoy Biswal said, adding a case has been registered under section 302 (murder) and the investigation is underway.

The woman's brother was questioned in connection with the incident and he told police that he was not aware of the accused being in love with the victim, police said.

The knife used in the crime has been recovered and police are the incident was a fallout of unreciprocated affection, they said.

The accused used to work as a sweeper at Safdarjung Hospital on a contract basis, but was unemployed of late and lived with two sisters, the DCP said.

The incident came days after a 32-year-old married woman was killed allegedly by her lover on the suspicion that she was cheating on him. The body of the woman with her throat slit was found in the Munak canal near the Delhi Jal Board office in Samaypur Badli.
