5. Imrana Rape Case

Imrana rape case is the case a 28-year old Muslim lady, who was repeatedly sexually assaulted by her father-in-law in June, 2005 in Uttar Pradesh.

This case bought the Islamic law under public scanner, which forced Imrana to accept the accused father-in-law as her husband because according to the Sharia, her marriage with her husband stands null and void as the Islamic law considered sexual relation with both the father and the son incestuous.

Even the village panchayat took it as a case of adultery instead of rape and forced Imrana to treat her husband as her son. This also sparked nation-wide controversy.

Imrana was also made to suffer dire consequences when she dared to continue living with her husband.

After Imrana's case was highlighted by the national media, the National Commission for Women directed authorities in Muzaffarnagar to take action, after which the police arrested the accused father-in-law Mohammed Ali.

A case under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code was registered against him and he was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment with a fine of Rs.8, 000. He also received a three-year term on a separate charge of criminal intimidation.
