6. Anjana Mishra Rape Case

A high profile rape case, Anjana Mishra Rape Case hit the news because of the involvement of various high profile names.

Anjana Mishra, a seperated wife of an Indian Forest Service officer was gang-raped on 9th January 1999 while she was traveling in a car from Cuttack to Bhubaneswar along with a friend.

This case created a major furore as Anjana accused the then Odisha Chief Minister J. B. Patnaik and his friend former Advocate-General of Orissa Indrajit Ray, along with a third person, Biban Biswal, for the incident.

As reported, while Ajnana was traveling in a car with her journalist friend, her car was interrupted by the three accused at an isolated place on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, and she was gang-raped by them infront of her friend.

As this case was hitting the news, resulting in a large outcry, the Congres Party President Sonia Gandhi replaced J.B. Patnaik by Giridhar Gamang as the CM of Odisha.

While the police arrested two of the three accused, the case was taken to Odisha High Court, where after a long battle, Anjana Mishra won the case, and the two accused were sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs.5,000 each.

However, Anjana did show dissatisfaction towards the investigating agency for not being able to trace the third accused Biban Biswal, who could have unveiled the conspiracy behind the heinous incident.
