10. Aruna Shanbaug Case

This is known as one of the oldest rape cases of India that got huge media attention. The victim Aruna Shanbaug was raped in 1973. Aruna was working as a junior nurse at King Edward Memorial Hospital, Mumbai.

On the night of 27th November, 1973, she was sexually assaulted and sodomized by a sweeper of the hospital, Sohanlal Bhartha Walmiki.

The accused, during the assault tied a dog leash around Aruna's neck, due to which the supply of oxygen was restricted to Aruna's brain, and she suffered brain damage.

Ever since the incident Aruna has been in a vegetative state for over 40 years now.

Her euthanasia plea was rejected by the Supreme Court in 2011.
