1. Delhi Gang Rape

The most atrocious case of rape was the 16th December, 2012, Delhi gang-rape case where a 23-year old physiotherapy intern was brutally gang-raped by six men in a moving bus in South Delhi.

The girl took a private bus along with a male friend, unaware that it was being driven by the joy-riders.

The accused started misbehaving with the girl, and thrashed her friend badly when he tried to rebel. He was knocked unconscious with an iron rod.

The culprits then dragged the girl beating her with the iron rod and raped her viciously.

According to the medical reports, the girl suffered serious injuries to her abdomen, intestines and genitals due to the assault

While the victim succumbed to her injuries while going through a treatment in Singapore, this incident evoked empathy, anger and outrage amongst the public across the country.

This case got widespread national and international coverage and was widely condemned at national and international level.

A large number of protests took place across the country after which all the accused of the crime were arrested by the police and were charged with sexual assault and murder.

While one of the accused Ram Singh, committed suicide in police custody, the rest of the accused went on trial in a fast-track court.

The juvenile culprit was convicted of rape and murder and given the maximum sentence of three years' imprisonment in a reform facility, while the rest of the accused were found guilty of rape and murder and three days later were sentenced to death by hanging on 10th September, 2013.

The death sentence of the accused was upheld by the Delhi High Court on 13th March, 2014.
