New Delhi: Sex and politics have gone hand-in-hand for quite a while now. Politicians involved in sex scandals and rape cases have become very common in recent times. One such case which created a huge public outcry was the rape case of Anjana Mishra, who was the separated wife of an Indian Forest Service officer.

Anjana Mishra was gang raped on January 9, 1999 in Odisha and this created a huge outcry which led Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi to make the state chief minister J B Patnaik to resign and Giridhar Gamang was appointed the new chief minister. The then advocate general Indrajit Roy was also made a party in this case.

On January 9, Anjana Mishra was traveling in a car with one of her friends. The duo was heading to Bhubaneshwar from Cuttack when it was intercepted at a deserted place near Barang. Anjana was gang raped by three men, Pradip Sahoo and Dhirendra Mohanty and Biban Biswal in front of her journalist friend.

Consequently, Anjana lodged a police complaint after which two of the accused were arrested on January 26, 1999.

The Orissa High Court ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe into the case after which a charge sheet wad filed on May 5.

The two-year long trial resulted in favor of Anjana on April 29, 2002. Pradip Sahoo and Dhirendra Mohanty were convicted for sexually abusing Anjana and were fined Rs. 5000 each.

However, the third accused Biban Biswal still remains at large.

Showing her anger over the negligence of the agencies in arresting Biswal, Anjana alleged that it was Biswal who could have unfolded the mystery as to who ordered them to commit the bestial act.
